After years of photographing weddings, I’ve learned there are a few critical things couples should look for when choosing a DJ, especially if you care about clean, timeless photos and a smooth reception.

One of the biggest concerns photographers have with DJs is lighting, specifically laser lights.
Laser lights can permanently damage professional camera sensors. Many photographers, myself included, will avoid photographing directly into lasers to protect our equipment. This means fewer angles, missed moments, or working around lighting instead of focusing fully on you.
Beyond the technical risk, aggressive lighting setups like flashing strobes, multicolored dots, or chaotic moving lights can drastically affect the look of your photos. What feels fun in the moment can translate into harsh colors, blown highlights, and distractions in your final gallery.
A professional wedding DJ understands how to use uplighting and soft dance-floor lighting that enhances the atmosphere without overpowering it or harming other vendors’ equipment.
